"Mood Swings" is an appropriate title for the 9 Songs on that CD. The mood is relaxed and the jazz-contaminated rock songs float over Funk. Addison Project is the compositional work of Richard Addison with 10 other musicians in charge.

The instrumental range is nicely broad, beside the guitars, violins, keyboards and saxophone and creates some melodic events whereby Richard holds back himself amazingly and strengthens the structure of the songs without being constantly in the foreground. Nevertheless, the rhythm is complex groove oriented but however it brings certain ease into the songs. In comparison, the melodies are very demanding but still giving sufficient free space for improvising runs, which are always responding and nicely filled over the very complex composed figures.

The talented expressions come deeply from the jazz, which leads the connection from Jazz and Rock to a living sound. The compositions are complex, however easily played on one hand because of the rhythm section crew, on the other hand also because of the keyboard. Outstanding and inspiring are the solos, keyboard, violin and saxophone which play partly at unison and more often pleasantly abstract and unusual. In addition to the keyboard, a marvellous pseudo Marimba tone supports partially the rhythm and which particularly succeeds. Altogether, the very good compositions were brought in somewhat light with heavier arrangements. But nevertheless "Mood Swings" is an outstanding work, a marvellous work such as the involved musician’s skills and the composer as well.

The entire album is very good and enjoyable. Jazz/rock freaks will not rub against the ease of the songs because the complex-dynamic runs are adjusting everything, while the album for the Mainstream group is much too far away from these ambitious waters. The title song "Mood Swings" is the quieter alternative, which does not leave instrumental desires open. The Canadian label Unicorn Records, which publishes the CD, proved once again that it is a happy and lucky owner.

"Mood Swings" ist ein treffender Titel für die 9 Songs der CD. Die Stimmung ist entspannt und die jazzverseuchten Rocksongs schweben auf Funk-triefendem Swing. Addison Project ist das komponierte Werk von Richard Addison, der für die Aufnahmen etliche weitere Musiker geladen hat. Die instrumentale Palette ist ansprechend breit, neben der Gitarre bestimmen Violine, Keyboards und Saxophon das melodische Geschehen, wobei sich Richard erstaunlich zurückhält und die Struktur der Songs festigt, ohne ständig im Vordergrund präsent zu sein.

Der Rhythmus ist komplex, dennoch aber groove-orientiert, was eine gewisse Leichtigkeit in die Songs bringt. Die Melodien sind im Vergleich dazu anspruchsvoller, zwar gibt es genügend Freiraum für improvisative Läufe, der stets sehr ansprechend gefüllt wird. Doch die komponierten Figuren sind sehr komplex, alles andere als leicht oder beliebig. Da äußert sich ein tief im Jazz verwurzeltes Talent, das die Verbindung von Jazz und Rock zu lebendigem Sound führt. Die Kompositionen sind komplex aufgebaut, werden jedoch leichthändig gespielt, das liegt zum einen an der lässigen Rhythmuscrew, zum anderen auch am Keyboard. Herausragend sind die Soli, Keyboard, Violine und Saxophon sind darin inspirierend aktiv, teilweise unisono und dabei oftmals angenehm abstrakt und außergewöhnlich. Zudem unterstützt das Keyboard mit fabelhaften Pseudo-Marimba-Tönen den Rhythmus partiell, was besonders gelungen ist. Insgesamt gesehen sind die sehr guten Kompositionen etwas light eingespielt worden, das Arrangement hätte härter, vitaler ausfallen können.

Doch trotzdem ist "Mood Swings" ein herausragendes Werk, eine fabelhafte Arbeit, die viel vom Geschick der involvierten Musiker und des Komponisten verrät. Ein besonderes Aushängeschild ist kein einzelner Song, das Album ist komplett sehr gut zu genießen. Jazz-rock Freaks werden sich nicht an der Leichtigkeit der Songs reiben, weil die komplex-dynamischen Läufe alles ausgleichen, während das Album für die Mainstream-Fraktion viel zu weit in ambitionierten Gewässern unterwegs ist. "Mood Swings" ist die stillere Alternative, die keine instrumentalen Wünsche offen läßt. Das kanadische Label Unicorn Records, das die CD veröffentlicht, hat wieder einmal ein glückliches Händchen bewiesen.
