It’s better with two
Jean-François and Denis have been playing together since the year 1987. They formed many bands that had short lives. These groups were composed of different members and with different « sounds » (classic rock, grunge, etc.). These formations have permitted them to gain a lot of stage experience.
Brotherly reunion
When in 1995 they lost their drummer, Denis proposed to invite Yves who had been playing for the last five or six years. Together they realized that playing covers of other artist work wasn’t satisfying them, it had become necessary to create their own music. But they were still missing a singer.
Finding your voice
In the year 1995, the three of them contributed to a progressive rock tribute band. Even though that project crumbled after only one show, all was not lost since it is that way they met Jocelyn. After the project, he came around to hear them in their practice room and made them listen to a demo tape of an original song he composed, the band realized then that they had found their missing link.
Almost there
Creation then reached its cruising speed. Their music started to build up and for the first time the band was good enough to stand the comparison to any other professional group on the circuit. To seal the band, musically speaking, they took part in a few shows, mixing covers with two or three original songs until they felt they were ready for the next step: Record a first album. But they were still missing one element missing.
Fate fixes everything
Realizing the benefits of obtaining a keyboardist’s point of view, regarding the orchestration, they decided to enroll Francis, one of Jocelyn’s previous guitar students who became a keyboard player. The integration came naturally since almost all the material had already been composed. But they realized that his talent for arrangements was a major advantage in the final sound of the album.
Recording
Jean-François took part of the recording and production process from the start. Their friend Andy Cherna, lent them his home studio, his great talent as a sound engineer and his production experience. The recording sessions occupied them for the entire summer of 2000 and the mixing took part during the following fall.
Conservation of Mass
Conservation Of Mass was launched on April the 7th 2001 in Montréal. Good reactions from the media didn’t take very long and they dedicated the entire following summer to the preparation of a series of shows, including a participation in the Baja Prog 2002.
Finding your voice again
During the summer of 2002, Jocelyn, the singer, announced that he wished to pursue his musical career elsewhere. This brutally stopped the production of the second album. Once the initial shock passed; they all came to the same conclusion: they did not wish to replace Jocelyn immediately. They then started from scratch, trying to find a new sound for the group. The working sessions, where they would rearrange the existing songs, became without planning and unconsciously writing sessions of new music. Jean-François, who already sang one song on the first record and a few covers during shows, took on the role of singer and all gave birth to tons of new ideas.
Climbing back up on stage
The writing sessions were put aside during the fall of 2002 because it became necessary to do a few shows in Montréal. For these, old songs had to be reworked and remodeled for the new team. These shows confirmed that, as a quartet, Hamadryad was as solid as before.
A second opus
The new album is in the works since the winter of 2002, with each passing week new ideas are grafted on in process songs and we assist to the hatching of new musical pieces. Even though the pressure is strong for them to go back to the stage, all efforts are dedicated to the creation of their second album.
The new kid on the block
It is toward the end of the work sessions for the second album, once the majority of the pieces were structured, that Francis announced that because of personal reasons he had to quit the band. Not wanting to leave the band in a bad position, he presented to them a talented keyboard player named Sébastien Cloutier. The band immediately gives him a challenge. They ask that he compose a partition for one of the song that is going to be on the album that will be released in a couple of weeks. Once this challenge met, they give him a even bigger one, learning all the keyboard partitions of all the songs they will present at the album launch.
Safe in Conformity
On may 14th of 2005 Hamadryad releases their second album at the Plaza theatre in front of their friends. For the occasion Francis joins them, for one last time, with his guitar. Sébastien is on this occasion presented to the public who gives him a warm welcome. The new « sound » is not far from what Hamadryad’s fans knew, without being exactly the same. It is with a strange and magical sensation that we listen to these new songs, because some parts are familiar and others are totally new. It feels like meeting an old friend that we lost sight of for a few years. The reactions are very positive and following the launch a series of shows are scheduled with well established bands like IQ and Arena and soon a participation in the 2006 ROSFest.

Deux c’est mieux
Jean-François et Denis jouent ensemble depuis les années 1987. Ils ont formés plusieurs groupes qui ont eu des existences plus ou moins brèves. Ces groupes furent composés de personnels différent et avec des « sons » différents (rock classique, grunge, etc.). Ces formations leurs ont permis d’acquérir une vaste expérience de scène.
Réunion fraternelle
Lorsqu’en 1995 ils ont perdu leur batteur, Denis a proposé d’intégrer Yves qui jouait déjà depuis cinq ou six ans. Ensemble ils réalisèrent que la reprise des œuvres d’autres artistes ne les satisfaisaient pas; il était devenu nécessaire de créer leur propre musique. Mais il manquait toujours un chanteur.
Trouver sa voix
En 1995, tout les trois collaborèrent à un groupe hommage au rock progressif. Bien que ce projet se soit écroulé après un seul spectacle, tout n'a pas été perdu car c’est de cette façon qu’ils rencontrèrent Jocelyn. Suite au projet, il est venu les entendre dans leur local de pratique et leur a fait écouter une bande démo d'une chanson originale qu'il avait composée, le groupe a réalisé alors qu’ils venaient de découvrir leur pièce manquante.
On y est presque
La création a alors atteint sa vitesse de croisière. Leur musique se développa et pour la première fois le groupe était assez bon pour être comparé à n'importe quel groupe professionnel sur le circuit. Pour sceller le groupe, musicalement parlant, ils participèrent à quelques spectacles, mélangeant des reprises à deux ou trois chansons originales jusqu'à ce qu'ils se sentent prêts à entreprendre l'étape suivante : Enregistrer un premier album. Mais il manquait pourtant un dernier élément.
Le destin « arrange » bien les choses
Réalisant les bénéfices d'obtenir le point de vue d'un claviériste, en ce qui a trait à l'orchestration, ils décidèrent d'engager Francis, un ancien élève de guitare de Jocelyn qui est devenu claviériste. L’intégration de ce dernier s'est fait naturellement puisque presque tout le matériel avait déjà été composé. Mais le talent de celui-ci pour les arrangements s'est avéré être un atout majeur dans le son final de l'album.
L’enregistrement
Jean-François s'est impliqué dans l'enregistrement et la production de l'album dès le départ. Leur ami Andy Cherna, a fournit son studio maison, un grand talent d'ingénieur de son ainsi qu’une expérience de production. Les sessions d'enregistrement durèrent tout l'été 2000 et le mixage des bandes sonores eu lieu durant l'automne suivant.

Conservation Of Mass a été lancé le, 7 avril, 2001 à Montréal. Les bonnes réactions de la part des médias ne se sont pas fait attendre et ils ont consacré tout l'été à la préparation d’une série de spectacles, incluant une participation au festival Baja Prog 2002.
Retrouver sa voix
Durant l'été 2002, Jocelyn, le chanteur, a annoncé qu'il poursuivrait sa carrière musicale sous d'autres cieux. Ceci a stoppé brutalement la production du deuxième album. Une fois le choc initial passé; ils sont arrivés à la même conclusion: le remplacement immédiat de Jocelyn n'était pas souhaitable. Ils ont alors recommencé du début, essayant de trouver un nouveau son pour le groupe. Les sessions de travail, où ils réarrangeaient les chansons existantes, devinrent inopinément et inconsciemment, des sessions d'écriture de nouveau matériel. Jean-François, qui chantait déjà une chanson sur le premier album et quelques reprises en concert, pris en charge le rôle de chanteur et tous ont accouchés de tonnes de nouvelles idées.
Remonter sur scène
Les sessions d'écriture ont dû être mises sur la glace pendant l'automne 2002 car il s'est avéré nécessaire de jouer quelques spectacles à Montréal. Pour ceux-ci, les vieilles chansons ont dû être retravaillées et remodelées pour la nouvelle équipe. Ces spectacles ont confirmés que, en tant que quartette, Hamadryad était aussi solide qu'avant.
Un deuxième opus
Le nouvel album est en chantier depuis l’hiver 2002, à chaque semaine de nouvelles idées sont greffées aux chansons en cours et l'on assiste à l'éclosion de nouvelles pièces. Même si la pression est forte pour qu'ils se produisent en spectacle, l'accent est mis sur la création de leur deuxième album.
Un petit nouveau
C’est vers la fin des sessions de travail pour le deuxième album, une fois que la majorité des pièces sont structurées, que Francis annonce que pour des raisons personnelles il doit quitter la formation. Ne voulant pas laisser le groupe en plan, il présente un claviériste de talent nommé Sébastien Cloutier. Le groupe le met au défi immédiatement. Il lui demande de composer la partition de clavier pour une des pièces de l’album qui doit paraître dans quelques semaines. Une fois ce défi relevé, ils lui en lancent un encore plus grand, soit apprendre toutes les partitions de clavier de toutes les pièces qu’ils présenteront au lancement.
Safe in Conformity
Le 14 mai 2005 Hamadryad lance son deuxième album au théâtre Plaza devant leurs amis. Pour l’occasion Francis se joint à eux, pour une dernière fois, avec sa guitare. Sébastien quand à lui est présenté au public qui lui accorde un accueil chaleureux. Le nouveau "son" n'est pas loin de ce que les amateurs d'Hamadryad ont connus, sans être tout à fait pareil. C'est avec une sensation étrange et magique qu'on écoute ces nouvelles chansons, car certaines parties sont familières et d'autres tout à fait nouvelles. C’est un peu comme rencontrer un vieil ami avec que nous avions perdu de vue depuis quelques années. Les réactions sont très positives et une série de spectacles s’en suit avec des artistes bien établis comme IQ et Arena et bientôt une participation au ROSFest en 2006.
